If you’re considering an abortion, there are several important health screenings you should take before scheduling the procedure.
Read this article to learn what 3 things you need before an abortion to protect your health and make the most informed decision.
Pregnancy Test
If you rely on common pregnancy symptoms like nausea or a missed period, you should take a pregnancy test to confirm your suspicions and remove any potential “what ifs” from your mind.
You can get a pregnancy test at your local drugstore, and we also offer no-cost tests at Hope Pregnancy Resource Center. We can also help you calculate the best time to take a test for the most accurate results by counting down from your last period.
Ultrasound
The next ideal step would be to take an ultrasound. An ultrasound can give you the following information:
- Pregnancy location: If the embryo is outside the womb, this will be an ectopic pregnancy and require medical attention. This would be addressed with a procedure other than abortion.
- The gestational age: The age of the pregnancy may affect what abortion procedures you’re eligible for, which may impact your decision.
- Pregnancy viability: If a heartbeat cannot be detected, you may naturally miscarry.
This important scan will give you details that empower you to feel confident in your choice. At Hope Pregnancy Resource Center, we offer no-cost ultrasounds.
STD Test
According to the CDC, 1 in 5 people in the US has an STD. It is possible to be a carrier and not display symptoms (asymptomatic). The good news is that STD tests are very treatable!
If you’re sexually active, the only way to confirm if you have an STD is to get tested. If you have an untreated STD and undergo an elective abortion, this could increase your risk for complications.
