If you are unsure of the best option for your unplanned pregnancy, three options are available: parenting, abortion, and adoption

Read the rest of this article to understand your choices, allowing you to make a more informed decision based on your unique circumstances.

Parenting

Even if you did not anticipate becoming pregnant, it doesn’t mean choosing to become a parent is out of the question. Many individuals in similar situations have successfully navigated and found immense joy in raising a child.

However, raising children does not come without its challenges, so it’s essential to ask yourself some honest questions to evaluate if this is the right choice for you:

  1. How do I envision the relationship with the other parent, if applicable?
  2. Do I have a support system in place?
  3. How will parenting affect my personal and professional goals?
  4. Can I handle the demands of single parenting?
  5. Have I researched available community resources and support?

If costs are a concern, many resources are available to parents. For instance, North Carolina Medicaid has expanded its pregnancy coverage to 12 months postpartum, highlighting just one example of the available support.

Considering these questions and exploring the resources at your disposal can help you make an informed decision.

Adoption

As the birth parent, you have full authority over the terms of your adoption plan. You can decide whether to maintain a relationship with the child and their adoptive family or keep your information confidential.

  1. Open Adoption: In this arrangement, you establish and maintain a relationship with the child and the adoptive family. Open adoptions are the most common type.
  2. Closed Adoption: With a closed adoption, you do not have a relationship with the child or the adoptive family, and information about you remains undisclosed.
  3. Semi-Open Adoption: In a semi-open adoption, you communicate through the adoption agency of your choice and exchange non-identifying information with the adoptive parents.

In the US, most adoptions are open because many birth parents desire to maintain a connection with their children. However, you must prioritize your well-being and make the best decisions.
